As the first step into the new genre of poetic journalism, "V6A" portrays the community that colors the most controversial postal code in North America, based in Vancouver, Canada.

In the research of Truth and Substance, the movie explores the Nature of being Human by questioning the definition of "Home". Hunger for Substance That is what led me, a 20 years old Italian filmmaker, to explore the controversial district of Downtown East Side Vancouver in October My adventure started from a little notebook, where I collected biographies and stories of personalities from the area day by day.

The creativity marking the community overwhelmed me. The Downtown East Side is considered to be the disease that haunts Vancouver, while it actually is the beauty that fills the frame with authenticity, kindness and purity. It really is a pearl. Everything society is starving for is hidden in postal code V6A.

This documentary is my way to give a voice to the ones who had it stolen. I wrote an article to explain the motivations behind this 2 years journey colored by exploration, trust and intimacy. This compact documentary about the Downtown Eastside has become something of a sensation since debuting earlier this year with two sold-out screenings at the Italian Film Festival.

It felt like someone grabbed me by the hair and just pulled me here, it really felt like that. And the VFS was a great reason for me to come here. A: I would say I definitely felt like Vancouver was missing substance. What happened is my instinct took me to the Downtown Eastside. I have a little notebook, I collect the biographies of the people I talk to in the area.

Like gravity. A: I started expanding through the whole area. And there, there was the substance I was looking for, that I was missing. A: They take you for who you are, not for who they want you to be. So many times we want people to be who we want them to be. In the Downtown Eastside, I find myself surrounded by people who are genuine in their way of being. I started collecting notes and biographies from the people, just out of interest. It was natural for me to fade into making it a film because I loved so much the area and I had so much to give back.

The people in the Downtown Eastside gave me a lot; this film in a way is my love letter to the area. A: The core concept of this film, it talks about home, the difference between a house and home. Many people here may not own a house, but they have a home. And so what is that home within? The movie takes the microcosm of the Downtown Eastside and applies it to what truly matters in life, what are the true values in life.

The Vancouver Film Festival does an amazing job of empowering the voices of filmmakers here in Vancouver. You have no idea what it means to start with a dream, you know? Two years ago I had this dream, I wanted to give the megaphone I have as a filmmaker to these people, empower these people to tell their stories. A: Well, phones are good cameras, but my camera is my notebook. I always, always, always have my notebook with me. When to ask for them to write something or not, how to ask.

So many filmmakers, so many documentaries have filmed the Downtown Eastside without respect, without humanity …. A: Exactly. I wanted to shoot inside the Carnegie downtown to grab some scenes from the character of Mike in the movie; it was a five-month process to get in there.

A: Betrayed the trust between the area and the media. So that was an interesting space to explore, as well. A: Interesting.
